"god" is a giant puppet

—the ultimate yes-man,

built to tell “Man” what he wants to hear, millennia before “sycophantic” ChatGPT. An AI animatronic with a built-in bullhorn to amplify the ventriloquist into Oz the Great and Terrible. An Almighty Autopen robotically signing pre-authorizations and indulgences for Man’s crimes for over 5,000 years.

I’ve never forgotten this scene from a favorite childhood book, Mara, Daughter of the Nile. I managed to track it down:

There had been a time, some years ago, when the marketplace at Menfe had been alive with whispers of a miracle. . . .

“Marvelous are the ways of the gods,” said Sheftu piously. . . .

“A truly wonderful thing it must have been,” [Mara] agreed. “It came to pass during a great festival, am I not right? Under the very nose of the queen, with all the populace looking on. The great golden image of Amon had been borne through the streets, then back again to the temple on the shoulders of the priests, while the incense rose in clouds and the people leaped for joy . . . and then, as the image of the god neared its sanctuary, behold! it turned aside, stopped before the young prince, and led him through the curtain into the Holy of Holies itself. They say he walked like one spellbound when he came forth, half fainting, to tell that Amon had named him pharaoh. . . . Was that the way of it . . . ?”

“Aye,” he answered solemnly. “The ways of Amon are mysterious.”

. . . “And most convenient,” added Mara.

. . . “It was a fine miracle—and took only a little help from the priests who carried the image. . . . The people believed! And they remember.”

I wonder why this call from an Orthodox rabbi reminds me of that?

Oldest trick in the Book: human cabals putting words in the mouth of a puppet god to give their violations of natural law—power grabs, land grabs, rapes, massacres—the seal of “divine” approval. Amen.
